1. Overview of CHS and Nihon University
I am majoring geography at College of Humanities and Sciences (CHS) of Nihon University. Nihon University has a lot of faculties and they are located in various places. Even among them, the campus of CHS is located in Setagaya Ward which is relatively close to the city area and it is in the middle of a quiet residential street, so it is comfortable enough to have an enjoyable campus life.
In the campus, students do not need to worry about the place to eat because there are three cafeterias and two convenience stores in it. As the shopping streets around the campus are flourishing as student districts, you can easily find shops like cafeterias, Japanese pubs or Ramen shops. I remember when the pearl tea came into fashion, seven or eight pearl tea’s shops opened in the district. Like this, we have various kinds of places to eat in and around my campus, so you will be excited about seeking where to have meals when you visit my campus!
2. Campus Life
From now, I’m going to explain a day of my campus life. Basically, the time to come to the university and to leave it varies from person to person because each person’s class schedule is decided on what class you take. CHS offers a lot of classes on a wide variety of study fields. It enables students to study other fields than their major’s. For me, I took a biology class or a psychology class though my major is geography. Freshmen have to take a lot of courses, so many of them have to take classes from morning till evening. However, the higher grade you become, the less courses you have to take, which allows you to spend free time doing other things like job hunting or your hobbies so after school, some participate club activities and others head for part-time jobs.
When it comes to clubs, CHS has so many clubs from sports-oriented clubs to liberal-arts-oriented clubs that I can’t grasp all of them. If you are interested in Japanese culture, I recommend you should join clubs which are unique to Japan like a Rakugo study club. Unfortunately, the covid 19 prevents us from meeting each other so a lot of activities including classes are held remotely. It is a pity that we have less opportunities to communicate with friends. Obviously, we can’t do club activities as actively as we used to. I can say that the university’s lifestyle is changing.
3. Exchanges with International Students
CHS has a lot of international students and professors. For example, I have a friend from China, and he teaches me Chinese language. You can have a comfortable life in this college. There are many places to have a chat comfortably with friends like caffes or shared spaces, which is a pleasant point of CHS. Before covid 19 spread around the world, the events to talk with international students using English while having lunch were held regularly. Now this events are held remotely so that students can join it from home using tablets or computers. I can’t express all the beautiful points of CHS, so I hope you come and see CHS at Nihon University!
