About University of Tsukuba
Hello. I’m Kazuki Negishi, a student at University of Tsukuba.
University of Tsukuba is a national university located in Tsukuba city, Ibaraki, Japan.
There are many research centers around Tsukuba city, such as Tsukuba Space Center by JAXA and a lot of smart people visit the city. The city is rich in nature so you can see beautiful landscapes such as Mt. Tsukuba on a sunny day. My university is the second largest university in Japan and I like it even if it’s quite far from my home because I can feel as if I was in another small country when I’m in the university.
Attractions
The university has various faculties and it’s easy to take lessons cross-sectionally across faculties. For instance, my major is biology and I can also take courses of International Studies or Art. Of course, you can take not only highly specialized lessons but also liberal arts courses, which helps you obtain a wide variety of knowledge. In addition, we have a lot of options of languages to learn so you can take some of them other than English.
The campus is well-equipped so students spend a fulfilling university life. For instance, the library is spacious and has the places where you can study and copiers you can use for free. Before exams or a deadline for an essay, I use the library or the Starbucks next to it.
In terms of meal, there are more than ten restaurants on campus including those of Japanese food, Chinese food, other Asian foods, and Italian food as well as halal food. The university has some research faculties outside of the campus, and I went to Shizuoka prefecture last year to do a research of sea creatures.

International Communication
University of Tsukuba accepts a large number of international students from various countries. “Global Commons” offers the opportunity with international students and Japanese students to communicate with each other and it often holds events. In the past, Global Commons held a mochi pounding event on New Year’s Day which is one of the famous Japanese traditional events.
I shared the experience and atmosphere of the university as its student. If you are interested in University of Tsukuba, please view the official website! (English version is available.)

Our project ~Tsukuba Learning Labs~

Some students of the university including me started the project related to science and education called “Tsukuba Learning Labs” in Autumn in 2020.
Our goal of this project is to share with general people outside of campus the researches of the university and to show enjoyment and attraction of study over specialized fields. The website of the project is in Japanese but we interviewed active graduate students so you can get an image of what the research in University of Tsukuba is like through the website!
